A HOUSE FOR HAJI BABA

Three weeks after airliners destroyed the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001, the United States was at war in Afghanistan. The initial military “shock and awe” drove out the ruling Taliban and ushered a period of relative optimism and hope. Reporter Sarah Chayes decided to give up her position as foreign correspondent for NPR and went to Afghanistan to rebuild a village destroyed by the bombing. A HOUSE FOR HAJI BABA follows her attempts to create change in the former Taliban stronghold of Khandahar and the broader attempt to bring democracy to the country. It wasn’t an easy task. Unknown at the time, Afghanistan only at the beginning of a war that would last twenty years.
